Genea Oxford Fertility Closure FAQs

1. What is happening?
The Genea Oxford Fertility clinic in Christchurch is closing on Friday 30 October 2020.
2. What does this mean?
While the clinic will continue to provide fertility treatment over coming months, we will not be treating fertility patients beyond the end of October 2020. The Genea Oxford Fertility team will contact all patients who have scheduled appointments or procedures in coming days. We understand that our patients and supporters will be surprised and disappointed by this news. We too are disappointed.
3. Why are you closing?
This decision is not one we wanted to make. We have a wonderful, dedicated team who have delivered an excellent service to many, many New Zealanders wanting to grow their families. After opening in 2014, we quickly established a reputation for the quality of our patient care, reflected in high patient satisfaction scores, and success rates that rank among the best in Australasia.
However, we have known for some years that obtaining a share of the public contract for fertility services was essential for the survival of the business. A huge amount of work went into submitting a recent tender for the contract but unfortunately the South Island District Health Boards decided not to offer Genea Oxford Fertility any share of it. We are obviously extremely disappointed by this decision, as we know patients and supporters of our clinic will be.
4. I’ve just started treatment, what do I do?
We have many patients who may be concerned as a result of this decision, but we want to reassure you that our commitment to excellent care continues to be paramount. The Genea Oxford Fertility team will contact all patients who have scheduled appointments or procedures in coming days. We will work with you to ensure that our ongoing patient care is of the high quality you expect from us. In addition, Dr Pete Benny will continue to provide fertility consultations and oversight through Oxford Women’s Health into the future. We will also continue to share information through email, the website and Facebook.
5. I have eggs, sperm, embryos stored at GOF
We ask that you advise where you would like your eggs, sperm or embryos to be sent, preferably before Thursday 13 August 2020. If we do not hear from you by that date we will try to contact you but will send your eggs, sperm or embryos to our nearest clinic, Fertility Associates Christchurch.
6. How does the transfer of eggs, sperm and embryos happen?
If you have eggs, sperm or embryos stored with Genea Oxford Fertility, we have already sent you our Release of Frozen Samples and Release of Medical Records forms for you to complete and email back to us. If you have not received them, please let us know and we can resend them. Please read them carefully and do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions. (Note: the Medical Records sent with your eggs, sperm or embryos relate ONLY to the treatment cycles that created them).
It’s advised that you then contact the IVF clinic you have selected to confirm your new storage. There will be paperwork requirements from their end to be completed before the transport can take place. You will find the contact details of each clinic listed below.
7. What are the Risks of transfer?
Anytime that eggs, sperm or embryos are removed from the storage tank there are risks associated with handling. However, it is now commonplace for eggs, sperm and embryos to move between clinics so the processes are well-established.
8. I don’t want to go back to my previous fertility clinic. That’s why I came here.
We appreciate that you made the decision to come to us. We want to help you find a solution. It may mean having treatment or transferring eggs, sperm or embryos to Fertility Associates, Repromed or Fertility Plus.
9. You have a special offer on. Does it still apply?
Yes, any cycles booked before the end of August still qualify for the $1,000 discount.
10. I have made a pre-payment. If I choose not to continue do I get a refund?
Yes. Our accounts team will contact you to arrange your refund.
11. What about my prepayment for storage?
We will of course refund any fees that you have paid for future storage at Genea Oxford Fertility. Our accounts team will contact you.
12. I’m told I must move my eggs/sperm/embryos. Do I have to pay?
GOF will arrange all transport to any IVF Clinic in New Zealand of your choice. This will be at no cost to you.
