Experience & Qualifications
Steve has been working in IVF and fertility science for more than 20 years, and holds both a PhD and a Doctorate in Medicine, as well as a Master of Reproductive Health Science and Human Genetics from the University of Sydney, and a Master of Public Health from the University of Queensland.
Steve has numerous leadership roles in women’s health both in Australia and internationally, and is a member of the NHMRC Embryo Research Committee, and a senior researcher in the Australian Reproductive Carrier Screening Project funded by the Australian Government.
Steve’s interest in fertility treatment began in the 1980s while he was studying embryology during his medical training at Queensland University. At the time, Australia’s first IVF baby, Candice Reed, had just been born and the incredible scientific achievement left an impression that would ultimately shape his future life direction.
Ten years later, at the beginning of his specialist training in gynaecology in Adelaide, Steve met and worked with fertility treatment pioneer Professor John Kerin, who provided further inspiration. Then, in 1998, as a Reproductive Medicine Fellow in Adelaide, Steve was the lead in a group which won the Fertility Society of Australia’s Clinicians’ Prize with their work on surgical sperm techniques. He travelled to the UK shortly after as the visiting speaker to the British Fertility Society to talk about their work.
